Sounds of Silence Looming For Newburyport’s Summer Waterfront Concert Series
June 22, 2008
The Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its sponsors have coordinated the very popular free friday evening concerts at Market Landing Park along the Merrimack River.
This year, which would mark the fourth year of the concert series, the chamber has had difficulty attracting sponsors for the concerts and has already had to cancel the first (July 18th) of the four scheduled summer concerts for 2008. The chamber still hasn’t made a final decision on the other three concerts. The next scheduled concert is for July 25 and two follow that on Aug. 8 and 15.
Each concert requires a sponsorship fee of $1500 to cover just the costs associated with the concert. Sponsors are allowed to hang banners over the stage, announce the performers to the stage and hand out company-related merchandise, among other perks.
The free Friday evening concerts are one of the great features of summers in Newburyport and it would be a shame to lose these summer concerts as they are well attended family events and are now associated with summer in Newburyport.
In Mr. Tait’s article, Ann Ormand, the chamber president, said the event last year attracted 200 to 300 people per concert, with visitors and residents filling the lawn at Market Landing Park. People brought blankets, chairs and, often, food from nearby restaurants to the park to enjoy the venue.
Many regional businesses have been struggling economically with the weakened economy. Unfortunately, the marketing and goodwill portions of small business budgets are often the first areas that are cut in difficult financial times.
If you would like to help sponsor, or perhaps co-sponsor, one of the summer concerts, contact Ann Ormand at the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and Industry. As a sponsor you can hang banners over the stage, announce the performers to the stage and hand out company-related merchandise, among other perks. It’s a great public relations opportunity.
