First Annual Newburyport Youth Soccer Association Spring Jamboree
June 11, 2008
Where: War Memorial Stadium at Newburyport High School
The Newburyport Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) will hold its first annual Spring Jamboree on Saturday, June 14th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Stadium located behind Newburyport High School. The NYSA anticipates that 500 families will attend the youth soccer matches on Saturday.
The NYSA is hosting its jamboree in conjunction with RESTORE, the non-profit organization that is raising money to renovate World War Memorial Stadium. The NYSA is suggesting that each family contribute a $10 donation at the event to RESTORE in order to help fund their efforts. Volunteers will be collecting donations at both entrances to the stadium.
World War Memorial Stadium, located behind Newburyport High School in Newburyport, Massachusetts, was built nearly 70 years ago as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that was established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The WPA was a landmark labor initiative that put more than 3.5 million men and young boys to work on war-time projects across the country to help them support their families.
The construction of the World War Memorial Stadium and the wall that still surrounds the high school are two of the more visible WPA projects in the Greater Newburyport area.
A recent site assessment of the facility estimated the cost of renovation and upgrades to be approximately $1.5 million. This includes extensive renovations to the visitor stands, including meeting handicapped accessibility requirements, and installing a new turf playing surface which will greatly expand the life and use of the facility.
If you want to help RESTORE with its fundraising efforts, stop by the World War Memorial Stadium at Newburyport High School on Saturday and watch some exciting Newburyport Youth Soccer.
The Snack Shack at the stadium will be open all day and local merchants and non-profit organizations will also be in attendance at the NYSA Spring Jamboree.
