Remains of Rare Giant Squid Found in Monterey Bay
June 26, 2008
According to John Field, a fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Santa Cruz, only four or five carcasses have ever been found in California waters.
An article by Kurtis Alexander of the Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Santa Cruz researcher Sean Van Sommeran and his crew with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation found the giant squid, or Architeuthis, Wednesday morning, floating roughly 20 miles off the coast of Santa Cruz.
Giant squid can grow upward of 50 and 60 feet and weigh up to a ton, according to researchers. The tentacles of the squid that was recovered by the team, which were as thick as a human leg, were mostly gone and its eyes and several body parts were missing. Researchers estimated that the squid was probably close to 25-feet long and weighed hundreds of pounds.

Seabrook Fireworks Dealer Says 80% Of His Business Comes In The Week Leading Up To July 4th Holiday
With the Fourth of July Holiday weekend quickly approaching, we will soon be hearing/seeing fireworks of all kinds, especially if you are near the beaches of Salisbury/Seabrook/Hampton. It is often a surreal setting as you walk on or drive along these beaches in the evenings approaching the 4th as you are surrounded by small scale fireworks displays of all types almost every where from Salisbury Beach to Hampton Beach.
Probably a good portion of those fireworks used on these beach displays come from Atomic Fireworks in Seabrook. In an article by Dave Choate on Seacoastonline.com, owner Steve Carbone of Atomic Fireworks Inc. in Seabrook said 80 percent of his business comes in the week leading up to the Fourth of July, and that the grand majority of that is from out of state.
MBTA Plans To Build 500 Car Parking Garage In Beverly
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has plans to build a 500 car parking garage in Beverly within 800 feet of the current Beverly Depot train station. An article by Paul Leighton in the Salem News provides an update on the project.
For Greater Newburyport residents, a parking garage in Beverly would open up more flexibility in using the commuter rail into and out of Boston, especially on weekends where there is limited service and non-peak commuter week-day travel times where there are two-hour gaps in commuter rail service. Beverly has more scheduled commuter rail runs into and out of Boston on weekends as well as on non-peak travel times on weekdays.
The lack of sufficient commuter rail parking in Beverly and Salem is a drawback to Greater Newburyport residents who entertain thoughts of driving to Beverly to take advantage of more frequent commuter rail service into Boston.
