Pepperweed Identification & Control Training Session at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
May 23, 2008
Where: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, 6 Plum Island Turnpik
If you want to get involved in the effort to help control and stop the spread of the invasive pepperweed plant in Essex County, then you should attend the information and training session on Saturday, June 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The session will show you how to identify and control perennial pepperweed. The first hour will be spent indoors learning about pepperweed and control techniques.
After the first hour, participants are invited to gain hands-on experience by pulling pepperweed at a site along the Plum Island Turnpike. This meeting is open to the public with no obligation to volunteer.
During the summer the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Mass Audubon Society will lead pepperweed pulls at sites throughout Essex County.
The project’s goal is to control or eradicate the pepperweed plant before it becomes as pervasive as phragmites or purple loosestrife, two other very widespread invasive plants in New England.
Controlling and eradicating the pepperweed plant is a significant effort and volunteers are essential to the success of the pepperweed control project.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this project but cannot make the training, is encouraged to contact Sarah Janson of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge by email at the following address: sarah_janson@fws.gov.

Clippers Steal Their Way To Cape Ann League (CAL) Championship
May 23, 2008
Newburyport got off to a slow start early in the season (1-4), but managed to turn it around and finished strong with a 10-3 CAL record. Overall they are 12-7 with one game remaining to be played on Sunday against Maimonides.
This year’s team lacked the big bats and the offensive power of past Clipper teams, but they made up for it with team speed, hustle and the ability to successfully steal bases. With one game remaining to play, Newburyport already has a school record 65 stolen bases.
The team speed should serve Newburyport well in the MIAA Division 3 Tournament.
